This painting was so fun and challenging to work on. Each element of the piece was in separate reference photos that I took at a threshing bee during harvest of 2022. I loved seeing how the threshing machines of the previous century (this one being an Advance-Rumely Ideal) preceded combines. Here I painted the wheat, cut, and laid in piles in the field for the team to collect in the wagon to then be run through the thresher, as painted in the front. The thresher separates the wheat into grain, which goes into the truck, and straw, which comes out the back. While this painting isn’t completely true to the way things were done, (I adjusted some things like the direction of the stubble with my artistic license) I have continued to find the threshing process fascinating ever since seeing it in action and am excited to share it with you all.
